Welcome to the NMU HelpDesk Wiki

What is Wiki?

Wiki is used as a collaborative writing tool and content management system. Wiki.org defines Wiki as follows: “Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.” A popular implementation of Wiki is Wikipedia.

What is the NMU HelpDesk Wiki?

The HelpDesk Wiki is an implementation of MediaWiki, which is an open source Wiki engine. The content consists of new procedures and content adapted from Remedy, the ACS website, HelpDesk email communications and documentation held by the full time staff. The NMU HelpDesk Wiki, or HDWiki for short, is to be used as a resource for the NMU HelpDesk staff in assisting our customers.

Why Wiki?

For information to remain current the HelpDesk needs a system that can be updated rapidly. We also have multiple sources of information with many experts. At one time or another, every HelpDesk employee is the expert on some situation. We need a system that we can easily add graphics, files and other objects. We need a system that we can easily control the content and access to it.
